Rose McDaid, a self-proclaimed “freshmore” at Penn State University, studying kinesiology, strikes one of the beginning poses of the Penn State Football Blue Band Pre-Game in front of the Penn State gate in the O. Rose, from Lebanon, Pa., left school in October of her freshman year of school in the fall of 2017 and received treatment for an eating disorder, but returned again in the fall of 2018 for her first full year of college, garnering the term “freshmore.” She is a member of the Penn State Majorettes squad, The Touch of Blue, which is Penn State’s twirling team, and is practicing for her re-audition to the squad.

Rose also made many close friendships with girls on the Majorettes, who have become some of her best friends. Some of these girls include freshman Kaitlyn Wassel, freshman Mackenzie Detwiler, and freshman Gillian Brooks, the new featured twirler, Blue Sapphire, not pictured. Rose, Kaitlyn, and Mackenzie are doing homework, studying, and goofing off at a table in Penn State’s Paterno Library. From left, Kaitlyn, Rose, and Mackenzie are pictured.

One of the steps in Rose’s recovery process for her eating disorder is to drink Ensures to supplement some of the nutrients she needs but can’t take in when she has an extremely busy school day. Rose drinks this vanilla Ensure at Penn State in her dorm room in Beaver Hall, which is located in Pollock.
Rose has received so much support while going through her recovery process, especially from the Majorettes squad and her coach, Heather Bean. Although Heather is not pictured, Rose is surrounded by many of her friends on the Majorettes squad, both past and present twirlers, in the stands of Beaver Stadium at Penn State’s Blue-White Game.

Rose works with a psychologist and a nutritionist in State College to receive more support for her eating disorder and the recovery process. Rose texts her nutritionist to ask a question about her meal plan, in her Penn State dorm room in Beaver Hall.
Rose juggles three of her batons, in the O. Richard Bundy Blue Band Building, to prepare for her re-audition for the Penn State Majorettes squad. After intense preparation, Rose made the squad again for the 2019-2020 school year and will be performing alongside all of her friends and teammates at school, sporting, and competitive events, including the Penn State football games.
